Council Update March 26, 2020

The District is monitoring the evolving COVID-19 crisis and we continue to adjust our response based on the recommendations of Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, Chief Public Health Officer and leaders at the Provincial and Federal Governments. We will continue to make decisions for the District based the rapidly evolving science of COVID19 and on the latest facts.

Protecting the health, safety and welfare of our community and its members is our number one objective and a priority in our decision-making.

The District recognizes that this unprecedented crisis is unfamiliar and unsettling; we thank members of the public for their patience and cooperation as we navigate this uncharted territory. We implore you to remain calm and follow directions from our leaders.

Our Municipal Hall remains closed to the public. Our staff continue to work daily on rotating shifts at the office and at home. They are available by phone at 250-474-3167 or email to address any of your questions or concerns. Our Public Works crew continues to work within our community with the directive to maintain physical distance from community members and other staff members. Although the buildings are closed, please be reassured that we continue to work within our community on your behalf.

Council and Committee meetings have been cancelled for the month of March. Council members are working from home and are connected electronically to each other and the staff. We have received authorization from the province to allow the municipality to hold regular remote videoconferencing council sessions. This will allow us to continue meeting as a council and make decisions on your behalf while promoting physical distancing as recommended by the health authorities. During this time Council will only be considering matters of a more urgent nature or items that must meet legislated deadlines.

The Mayor and Council have been receiving daily communication updates from the Metchosin Fire Department Fire Chief and Emergency Program Coordinator, Stephanie Dunlop. Chief Dunlop continues to provide us with the latest COVID-19 statistics on Vancouver Island and the most recent actions by the Emergency Response Teams.  We thank her for her vigilance and her continued leadership.

It is absolutely essential that we all do our part to minimize the spread of this virus. Please follow the directions of Dr. Bonnie Henry to ensure the well-being of all our community members but particularly those who are most vulnerable such as the elderly and immune-compromised. We can all help to “flatten the curve” by:

  • Leaving home only as absolutely needed for groceries or essential services;
  • Practicing physical distancing - stay 2 meters apart (about the width of a car);
  • Washing your hands with soap and water, frequently, for a minimum of 20 seconds;
  • Staying at home if you are sick;
  • If you exercise out in the community, do not gather with other people outside your household;
  • Complying with federal and provincial travel advisories;
  • Travelers returning from international destinations need to self-isolate for a minimum of 14 days;
  • Please check on your neighbors via phone or email.

So much depends on our ability to make good decisions now and going forward.  Together we can remain calm and healthy and mitigate the spread of this novel coronavirus.

Please feel free to reach out to us as needed at or at 250-474-3167.

Mayor John Ranns and Councillors Sharie Epp, Kyara Kahakauwila, Andy MacKinnon and Marie-Térèse Little.
